My name is Javan and I’m a first-generation Azerbaijani settler and immigrant who lives, works, and explores in Canmore area. I came to Canada over 10 years ago with hope and gratitude, and have proudly called Canmore home ever since. Like many others who’ve arrived here from somewhere else, I was looking for opportunity, connection, and a sense of belonging and I’ve found those things by being part of a community that looks out for one another.

I work with Settlement Services in the Bow Valley, a program funded by the Government of Canada supporting newcomers as they settle into life in the Bow Valley. That means helping people navigate housing, employment, language, and local resources, while also working to improve systems so they meet people where they’re at. This work continues to show me how powerful local decisions can be in shaping whether people feel included and supported.

I also work part time at Save-On-Foods, where I get to see and serve the community. It keeps me connected to the realities many of us face, the rising cost of living, balancing jobs and responsibilities, and the challenge of staying rooted in a place that’s not always easy to afford.

I hold a Bachelor’s degree in Economics and Law and have worked in both hospitality and community sectors, giving me both the people skills and the policy lens we need at the council table.

I live in Canmore with my adventure cat, Joy. You’ll often find us walking the trails, watching wildlife, and joining monthly clean-ups. Beyond enjoying the outdoors with Joy, I stay actively involved in our community, whether it’s through volunteering, helping out at local events, or taking part in activities organized by different groups and organizations across town.

I love trail running, hiking in summer and cross-country skiing, ice skating in winter. Being outside, connecting with others, and contributing to the place I call home are all a big part of what grounds me and why I care deeply about the future of our town.

Everything I do is shaped by a deep care for this place and the people in it. I believe Canmore should be a place where everyone has a chance to feel at home, be heard, and live with dignity. If you share that vision, I’d be honoured to have your support as we work toward that future together.
