Acknowledgement of Land and Commitment to Truth and Reconciliation

I acknowledge that I live, work, and campaign in the Canmore area known as Chuwapchipchiyan Kudi Bi on the traditional territories of the Îyârhe Nakoda Nations (Bearspaw, Chiniki, and Goodstoney First Nations), the Blackfoot Confederacy (Siksika, Piikani, and Kainai), the Tsuut’ina First Nation, and the Rocky View District of the Otipemisiwak Métis Government (District 3).

As an immigrant who came to Canada seeking opportunity and belonging, I carry a deep respect for this land and for the First Peoples who have cared for it for generations. I recognize the truth that this valley, like much of this country is home to vibrant Indigenous cultures whose displacement and resilience continue to shape our shared story.

Reconciliation is not a checklist it’s a lifelong responsibility. I am committed to listening, learning, and building relationships that honour Indigenous voices and leadership. If elected, I will work to ensure that municipal decisions are made with respect, accountability, and a commitment to justice.

Since moving to Canada, I’ve made it a personal priority to learn about the land I live, work, and play on and to honour the First Peoples of these lands through action, not just words. Over the past decade, I’ve volunteered at Indigenous-led events like the Town of Canmore’s National Indigenous Peoples Day, Powwows in Banff, and programming at artsPlace, and I’ve helped organize Indigenous-focused events through the Canmore Young Adult Network (CYAN).

Through my work with immigrants and newcomers, I’ve also supported efforts to raise awareness about Indigenous history and the importance of reconciliation. I believe it’s vital for newcomers to understand the past and present of the land they now call home.

If elected, I will advocate for Indigenous voices at the Council table and help ensure policies reflect the lived experiences of Indigenous community members.

This means:

  • Uplifting Indigenous voices and leadership in local decision-making

  • Seeking guidance from local Nations when appropriate and building relationships rooted in respect

  • Supporting community-led initiatives that promote truth, justice, and reconciliation

  • Helping to create space for Indigenous ceremony, language, art, and culture

  • Embedding Indigenous perspectives in how we plan, build, and live together in Canmore
